Yoga is one of the healthiest forms of exercise when it is done with proper alignment. It is not as important to pose perfectly as it is to pose with good alignment. Your body should be placed in such a way that your muscles and bones are aligned creating a healthy balance between tension and relaxation leading to good posture.
In general, our bodies are misaligned as shown in the picture above because we do not focus on our postures when we study, drive, walk, eat, sit or watch TV, etc. This can create muscle pain, lack of energy, headaches or a general feeling of unwellness.
However, we may also experience physical symptoms when our spirits or emotions are misaligned such as when we are in an unhappy relationship or unsatisfied at work. If you feel trapped in a relationship or in a job which you do not like, it can be a key source of unhappiness and emotional misalignment. This can create an unhealthy situation leading to emotional or physical pain.
Yogis and Yoginis believe that if your body is misaligned, then your life may be out of alignment too. So if you practice Yoga and pay attention to your alignment and focus on proper posture, this will eventually affect your life and your Yoga mat! If you are in good alignment on your Yoga mat, then you will be in good alignment in your life.
